Sunday Morning - “Moments”
Good morning & happy Sunday!
Special moments in our lives are truly the one thing we shall remember and treasure the most. When we are close to the end of our journeys, the moments we cherished will be the memories that we share. I recently watched the movie “With Honors” starring Brendan Frazer and Joe Pesci. Brendan played a college student attending Harvard. He loses his thesis and it is found by Joe Pesci’s character, a local Harvard bum. They make a deal; a page of the thesis for food each day. Brendan’s character is extremely focused on his school and completing his thesis, so focused that he is missing real life lessons. I haven’t seen the movie in a very long time and not sure why I decided to watch it again. As I get older, I have discovered that many things affect me differently today than they did when I first experienced them. This, due to the fact that through time and experience, I have changed as a person. Thus, how I feel, how I am affected and what affects me are different. At one point Frazer’s character begins to realize he may be learning more from the Harvard bum, played by Pesci than he is actually learning at Harvard. At one point in the movie Frazer’s character asks the bum about his life; what he has or remembers. Pesci’s character reaches in his pocket and pulls a small pouch which is filled with stones. Pesci then explains that each stone represents a special moment in his life. He said, “Whenever I want to go back to that moment, all I have to do is pull out that stone, place it in my hand.” and he is brought back to that specific moment… that special memory. First, I loved that he used “stones” but it also made me think about the Sunday Morning where I quoted Rainn Wilson when he explained that he wanted to fill his life with moments where he was truly connected, like time with his son.
Many of the lessons in life are consistently recurring in all our lives. There are no tricks or new things to be realized. It’s like cliche’s; they are, because they are true and will always be true. Our goal should be to recognize them no matter where we are in life, no matter how we feel or what we want. We are being guided, shaped, conditioned and affected everyday by everything around us. But if we look closely, we will see patterns, recurring themes and that is what I feel we can embrace and count on. If I hear a life lesson once, I try to retain it. If I hear it more than once, I feel responsible to share it with all those I come into contact with. We all have challenges, tests, struggles, things we wish were different. But we all have moments; moments that if we are truly present, we will retain them forever. Our goal then should be to focus on accumulating as many of these moments as we can along our paths, during our lifetime, so we too can share them with the ones we love.
peace & God bless
